During the 1800s, The Plains Indians prospered from not only the vast herds of bison, but also the newfound horse that transformed the Plains people and their methods of survival. Hide traders’ records indicate that a white bison occurred only once in five million. So it came as no surprise that the sighting of a white buffalo was of great importance to a tribe such as the Lakota. Not only was it a rare and unbelievable sight to see but it was also an omen in the Lakota’s religion of great prosperity and good days to come.
